Things To Do During Your Stay

The number one thing to do is relax, and you won't need to go further than the cottage for this. So why not just spend some time drinking tea, eating cake and watching the waves from the comfort of the living room; or curled up on the sofa with a good book; or watching a black and white movie with a glass of wine.

Alternatively you could:

  • Take the short walk from the end of village up through the woods. This takes you past the local fishing loch and the site of the ancient Motte and Bailey castle. Fishing permits are available from the tackle shop in Stranraer
  • A little further over the hill is Ardwell House whose gardens are open to the public all year round and definitely worth a look
  • Take a walk down to the beach at Chapel Rosan Bay. If the sun's out then you've a good chance of seeing seals sunbathing
  • Spend hours watching all the different birds that come into the garden to feast on the nuts and seeds (these can be purchased from the Spar store in Drummore, which also has an excellent variety of magazines to choose from). We have a resident robin, goldfinches, chaffinches, blue tits, great tits, green finches, wrens, blackbirds, loads of sparrows, and the (very) occasional moorhen.
  • If you fancy trying your hand at fishing, then Tim at the Boat and tackle shop in Ardwell will sell you all the kit you need and point you in the right direction for the best chance of landing your tea. For example, you can fish for Sea Bass from the beach at Sandhead or Pollock from the rocks at Ardwell Bay
  • Keep your ears peeled in the evenings, as there are a goup of barn owls that hunt in the field behind Bailey Cottage.
If you get the opportunity we would also recommend a visit to:
Wigtown, Scotlands National Book Town, where you can spend hours rummaging through the different book stores and tearooms.
Logan Fish Pond (www.loganfishpond.co.uk) which has a restored vicorian larder, touch pools, cave aquarium, bathing hut and pool.
Check out the local lighthouses at www.nlb.org.uk . The lighthouse at the Mull of Galloway is open to the public between April and September and you will get a certificate to show that you climbed to the top, and the really brave can get out on the external walkway.
Details of the Botanic Gardens at Logan can be found at: www.rbge.org.uk
Glenwhan Gardens are also in the area (www.glenwhangardens.co.uk)
Terraly Riding Centre for the equestrian in the family
  The ancient Kirkmadrine Stones
It is always worth a browse through Wigtown, one of Scotlands "Book Towns", which also holds a Saturday market.
